#40 - How to REALLY study Pharmacology: GERD / GI Medications

November 30, 20221 min read

Do you know the difference between H2 Blockers and Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)?⁣

Watch this quick video and find out!⁣

In this video I share a concept map that my student recently made on how to remember the medications used to treat Gastro-Esophageal Disease (GERD).

I love how this student condensed several lecture slides into a 1 page concept map and highlighted the 2 drug classes we use to treat GERD: H2 Blockers and PPIs. ⁣

Her map included these MUST know concepts about H2 Blockers and PPIs:

𝗛𝟮 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀:⁣
--all end in tidine⁣
--famotidine, nizatidine, cimetidine⁣
--Reduce gastric acid production by blocking histamine 2 release ⁣
--less aggressive compared to PPIs⁣
--may be used lifelong⁣

--well tolerated (except cimetidine in elderly!)

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝘂𝗺𝗽 𝗜𝗻𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 (𝗣𝗣𝗜):⁣
--all end in prazole⁣
--omeprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole⁣
--Reduce gastric acid production by blocking the gastric proton pump ⁣
--more aggressive compared to H2 blockers⁣
--should be limited to 8 weeks or less, otherwise potential for adverse effects⁣

The best concept maps are the ones that are MEMORABLE! Don't limit yourself to learning from your notes, powerpoint and flashcards. ⁣⁣Change your study strategies, CHANGE YOUR LIFE. ⁣⁣
